Description

The 10 CK Flyer framesets are finally available to order. Before I move on to the bike, a little history of this and how it came to be. Its a well worn tale but I guess it needs to be here, as here is its home. Charlie came to stay with me in Llangollen last year as a guest of Stooge, showed him the local haunts, had a great time, should’ve been the end but Ben @Fat Tire Flyer UK n Europe had a dream of making a CK frame happen, asked me, I said yes, Charlie said yes too, so from that point on it had to happen.

The Bike!  A klunker would’ve been too obvious, a cliché almost, so that was out, and besides, the pictures that really did it for me were those from the very earliest post-klunker days when the fledgling mountain bike builders and riders were still finding their feet. More specifically, the pictures of CK on his Breezer with a fistful of seat-tube and sloping top tube heading the wrong way. I’ve always dreamed of owning one of the earliest bikes, so this a nod and homage to those machines but with one foot firmly in the Now, namely clearance and geometry designed around 27×3.00 tyres, disc brakes, full titanium construction and the finest all conquering truss fork.

Sizing and geometry!  Lets get this bit out of the way first. Designing that sloping top tube and still getting the bike to work was the most time consuming and difficult thing I’ve had to do, which is crazy, because on paper it couldn’t be simpler. But it was a case of function chasing form, and yes, the design is certainly an anti-hero when drafted alongside the archetypal modern mountain bike. To make it work the seat tube is 24″ long, its massive, but it looks crazy good in the flesh. The bike in the photos is the rolling prototype as ridden by me, i’m 5’11 and you can see how much post I have out. If you are a shorter rider and really, really want one, you can have one but it will need a horizontal top tube. As is, the 24″ frame will only really suit anyone 5’11 and over.

The rest of the frame geometry numbers are thus – 600mm ETT, 67 degree head angle, 60mm BB drop, 450 mm chainstays, 71 degree sea tube. 27.2 seat tube. 73mm BSA threaded BB. 142×12 rear axle. 100×15 front axle.

The CK Flyer is limited to 10 framesets worldwide. Its a collector’s piece that demands to get covered in dust and see a long, hard life on the trails.  The framesets will only be produced as and when they are ordered so there will be a wait of approx. 4 months from the point of order.  This bike is a labour of love for a personal hero who’s been a major inspiration on my life and it goes without saying that a very large percentage of the profit will be going directly to Charlie. A deposit is required at the point of ordering with the balance payable when the frames are ready for dispatch.  As always, feel free to contact me with any questions.

NB – production frames will have triple cage mounts on the fork legs and a regular seatclamp in the interests of long term reliability.
